One of the pleasures of the three day drive across America was stopping in Burlington, CO to see the old restored and lovingly tended carousel at the Kit Carson County Fairgrounds. It was the sixth carousel made by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company between 1904 and 1933. It lives under a protective roof and can be seen through a glass pane year round, which is how we had experienced it multiple times over the years. Imagine our delight when we discovered it open and at the ready for rides on this trip! I rushed right in and bought wooden ride tokens for a quarter apiece and we selected our steeds. The music is provided by the fully operational Wurlitzer Monster Military Band Organ in the middle ... the only thing missing was the brass ring (which insurance companies in their infinite wisdom have declared too dangerous!). It was the BEST!!!
Back in Salida again we unpacked truck and trailer into a storage unit adjacent to the one we already have filled with our household belongings. There was some pretty heavy machinery so we begged help of Dom and Evan followed by an outing to the local pizza haven afterwards.
The monter task at hand is of course the siding ... and it is coming along beautifully. Here is Steve who is a master at cutting boards to fit around insanely complex places, as evidenced by this board. The sad boy on the right is Chris, temporarily waylaid by a bum knee. He woke up the day after the heavy machinery lifting with a screamingly painful knee. The doctor advised him the logical thing: Ice, rest, advil. But you know Chris, he's suffering more from being unable to work than from the pain.
Here are views of the current state of the house exterior. Aspects of it remind me both of my farmor's house in Bromma and my mormor's house in Öttum ... makes me feel all cozy and warm and secure.
This is the area they are working on right now, with the white gaps showing prior to the battens being put in place. After a heavy rain one evening we discovered a bunch of rather large paw prints in the mud next to the house. First perusal on the web suggested Puma/Cougar/wild cat prints ... others have suggested cayote ... I'm not real crazy about either scenario. Both make sense as both types of animals live in the area and were, of course, here first.
